1 Timothy – The Surly Curmudgeon

Paul concludes this first pastoral letter to Timothy with more encouragements and warnings – encouragement to remain faithful to his calling, and warning about earthly wealth and false teachings.

Paul begins summing up his letter to Timothy with admonition to remain true to the Gospel teaching he has recieved. He continues with a warning about the dangers of the love of money.

Paul finishes his specific instructions for pastoral ministry with instructions to honor elders and for disciplining elders found guilty of transgressions. Paul charges Timothy against partiality and advises care and patience in choosing church servants. Paul finishes with instruction for bondservants to honor and respect their masters.

We continue our look at 1 Timothy with Paul’s advise to Timothy about assuming leadership at Ephesus. Then we examine Paul’s instructions about church provision for widows.

We continue our study of 1 Timothy. Paul begins by describing the church as the pillar of Truth in the world. Then gives a brief Gospel summary he calls “The mystery of godliness.” He tnen gives a warning about the presence of false teachers, and concludes with an admonition for us to train ourselves in godliness.

We continue our study of 1 Timothy with Paul’s instructions for appointing deacons within the church. We note that deacons are servants with no leadership function. We concluded with a review of Paul’s instructions about overseers and deacons and the questions these instructions raise for today’s churches.

We continue our study of 1 Timothy with Paul’s admonition for us to pray for all people. Paul’s also declares that Jesus is the only mediator between God and man. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus alone. There is only one path to God – through Jesus and His Gospel.
